A hidden gem that often gets overlooked. It’s a casual spot just across from Gruene Hall, so it’s an easy dinner before a show.
Things to Do in Gruene
Catch a show at Gruene Hall.Built in 1878, it calls itself Texas' oldest continually operating dance hall. There's live music almost every night of the week, mostly local and Texas artists, and a lot of nights there's no cover. Just walk in, dance and listen.
Every summer, Two Tons of Steel plays Two Ton Tuesdays, a series that's been running for 30 years. It draws all ages, including plenty of local high schoolers who come out to dance with their friends.
Big names like George Strait and Garth Brooks have played here over the years, though those shows are rare. Kacey Musgraves played Gruene Hall before she hit it big, and we still kick ourselves for missing her. Check the lineup at gruenehall.com.
Walk down to the river.Head down the hill and stand on the bridge over the Guadalupe River. It's a short walk from the shops and restaurants.
Treat the kids at the Gruene General Store. Kids love it. There's a big variety of ice cream and fresh fudge, plus candy, drinks, snacks and Gruene t-shirts and hats. 1610 Hunter Rd.
Stop by Gruene Outfitters. A big selection of outdoor gear and clothing, plus a fly fishing shop with a knowledgeable staff. They can also help you line up a guided fly fishing trip. 1629 Hunter Rd, grueneoutfitters.com.

Tubing and Rafting the Guadalupe from Gruene
Gruene is a great launching point for the Guadalupe River. You can book a shuttle with a local outfitter, put in upstream and raft all the way down to take out at Gruene. Or put in at the Gruene bridge and float down to Cypress Bend Park at 503 Peace Ave, the last public tubing access on the river in New Braunfels.
The City of New Braunfels sets river rules, like container limits and closures when the flow is high. Check the city's Guadalupe River page before you go.
When to Go
Gruene is great year-round, but our favorite time is winter or any cool evening. That's when the open-air Gristmill and its fire are at their best.
Gruene hosts festivals all year. The two best known are the Gruene Music & Wine Fest at Gruene Hall, which raises money for the United Way of Comal County, and the Texas Clay Festival, where Texas potters and sculptors show and sell their work. Both are held in October. See more New Braunfels and Gruene events by month.
